Inglewood, California Leather Factory

California Lacing

THE CHALLENGE

When a 1950’s Hostess Bakery Headquarter’s office space became available in the Inglewood neighborhood of Los Angeles, under the name ’The Bread Yard’, it was deemed the perfect location to move the newly launched California Lacing leather factory into.

6000 square feet of raw industrial space was transformed into a magical Los Angeles factory with humming machinery and sparkling materials. The original parquet flooring was brought back to life and its high bow truss ceilings maximized by storage and lighting. A second floor loft space was cut out of a ceiling space that originally was a baking room. This made way for an original custom made leather folding machine, in use since 1940, to manufacture custom leather binding. A Large 20 foot wide Neon Sign was hung which said ‘The Whole World is in Your Hands’, speaking to the handcrafted nature of the factory’s production methods.

Once the space was planned, furniture set and production materials were brought in, the carefully considered space planning for each department was in its best operational form: its main entrance brought visitors straight through the colorful and exciting production floor, and moved them into the cutting and packing room and then finally following back into the administrative spaces.

Creative and inspired meetings could be had in the conference room on its custom marble table with exposed brick with natural light pouring in.
